I SOOOO cannot believe this! I got a new guitar this past Friday. Not so much a big deal.....NOT! I don't get it until this Monday (sent it back for electronics to make it acoustic/electric). Why is it such a big deal? It is only the biggest thing I ever laid money down for (not counting houses). This doesn't even match a new car. It is a Martin! A no S**t REAL Martin. The cool part is it is a special edition. It is listed as DVM (Veteran's Model). It has the word "VETERANS" inlaid in the neck, a National Defense Service ribbon painted and dyed into the last fret and has all 5 service medallions on the head. GORGEOUS! and it sound sooooo incredible.

I got a Martin! I got a Martin!

If I could do the Snoopy dance....I would...in public. There are even some really nice pictures at the Martin site. I can't wait until Monday. If it comes in on schedule...I get to use it at open mike at Kate's. Everyone will be green with envy!

Happy happy joy joy!

I sincerely hope that folks take a moment out of their busy day on Saturday to thank a Vet. I always make it a point to thank other vets for their service. A couple of years ago, Sherry and I bought lunch for 8 Army members at Bennigan's in Springfield. When they asked me why, I simply said a small thanks for what they do. When I was in during the "cold War", I didn't get treated very well. In fact I was spit on twice (once here in the U.S.!!!). We work hard at what we do. It isn't for the glory, that is for sure. It certainly isn't for the monetary benefits. It is to keep the torch alive for the freedoms that all of us as citizens of the United States of America get to experience. Hard work, long hour, holidays at sea/deployed and very little recognition. I am VERY proud of my service. My "shipmates" on The Juryrig know that I always wear my Submarine Dolphins. To all of my friends, I hope you will take that one small moment...you can really make some one's day. On another note concerning Veteran's Day, the National Commander for the VFW has started an initiative for all vets to wear their awards on military holidays..Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July as a show of solidarity and to get recognized for what we have accomplished. This is much like most foreign countries on their military holidays. I will be wearing mine this Saturday.

God Bless!

Dragon
AKA Chris Herst, STS1/SS, USN Retired

So this was a cool weekend! I found out many things this weekend about a lot of our crew. Fett...you rock! Mish....best hugger in the world (still). Sam I can't say enough about you Darlin'. Thank the Gods for you sweetie! We have a very cool Captain. Crew needs to take a look at all he does for us. Some of us take our jobs seriously. Some don't. Bacon cooking at a camp site is proof God wants us to drool! Choclate liquors...'nuff said there. Jeff...stop adding flasks!!! (just kidding of course). Kenny...so there was this guy that walks into a bar...(hee hee). It was nice to see everyone and I aint going through the list...I don't want to leave anybody out. Lots of hugs make the day go by! BEER! oh..wait...MORE BEER! Watching 30 pirates go to bed by 10:30? Who woulda' figured that? Broadside nuts! (for those that participated). After missing out on a couple weekends...all was right with the world. Thanks to all of you! Joe...very cool talking sub stuff. It is nice to relate every now and then.

Finally, I serve one Captain and one flag. In fun or not, I stand fast on that. I know there are several others that did too (you know who I'm talking about). "Hand salute! Ready! Too! HUZZAH!" Great fun...can't wait for next year!!

Humbly
Dragon,
Ship's Adjutant

Well,
Grainne and I had a pretty good time at New York. We both came down sick last wednesday. I sweat it out that night. Grainne was out from work Thur., Fri. then into the weekend. No Faire. Clinic for 5-1/2 hours on Sunday. She was out of work Monday and yesterday. This really kicked her ass. I have had a minor sore throat for 5 days now and my kidney is starting to hurt. No, it isn't mono. But I am concerned because there are a whole lot of other nasty things it could be. (Thinking happy thoughts). So I get to go visit the Doc tomorrow. Hopefully it is left over from being sick. I seriously want to come play this weekend. I wish we could have seen that humble tribute Sunday night. I was mostly depressed on Monday. 9/11. A day that will be remembered forever. It was also the day I arrived in the DC area. Very sad. I also remember a very close friend of mine that was still in the Navy called me at Sherry's place that night. He said, and I quote, "Don't worry brother, I've got the watch. You earned your sideline seat." Sherry was scared to death they were going to call me out of retirement. I would have gone in a heartbeat too. God Bless us and our country! I hope he looks over the souls lost that day and the millions that still grieve.

On a lighter note, I found the tattoo I want on my chest. It is a skull and cross bones with dolphins (subs) and ribbon on top and bottom. It says: U.S. NAVY
SUBMARINES

IRON BOATS
STEEL BOATS
With the picture in between. SOOOOOO COOOOOL!! I get my dolphins AND pirate stuff all at once!

Hope everyone is well. We hope to see you all very soon!

Dragon

For the King

I meant to update this yesterday. As 30,000 fans gathered at Graceland for a candlelight vigil, I went home and sang 6 or 7 Elvis songs. My heart heavy as I remembered that day in 1977. But then the singing part made me smile. I love doing Elvis. My little way of keeping his memory alive. So he did some drugs, if you couldn't go ANYWHERE, you would need an outlet too. All that aside, the man gave us his voice and his heart. Nothing could match the "King" on stage. As some of you know, he still has "that effect" on women. His music made people smile, cry and fall in love. He inspired others to never forget wheere they came from. He was so much to so many and yet remained humble to the people, the fans that made him what he became....the King of Rock and Roll. So I will finish this up with a few short lines....quotes from the King himself.

"The image is one thing and the human being is another. It's very hard to live up to an image."

"So every dream I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times...I learned very early in life that: 'Without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend -- without a song.' So I keep singing a song. Goodnight. Thank you."

Yes, Elvis has left the building, but the sun NEVER sets on a legend. As long as I can carry a tune, I will continue to sing the songs of my hero.

Thank ya, Thank ya very much....

Dragon

(thanks ladies)
Submariners should NEVER go into a Catholic church. (Rain...thunder...lightning...some wierd bolt in my drivers side rear tire...nuff said there)
Other peoples parents are cool...you can spin them up then leave...oh wait thats kids...um..same thing!
I ALMOST made 5 different people shoot their drink through their noses at different times.
RENNIES ROCK!
People that don't do renfaires...think we are quite wierd.
Ditto the other way around.
Catholic Priests are psychotic....um...psychic. (not sayin' what happened...ask at faire).
When you sing and play a song you wrote, and it means something to the bride and groom and you, one has the ability to quiver like jello in an earthquake!
I shocked Majorchaos!
I don't remember singing...only praying that I didn't fall over.

And finally, surrounded by friends (family really) and making them laugh is the bestest!
I have come to a difficult decision. Reality has slapped me in the face recently. I don't think I will be going to open mike night anymore. Most of the regulars are actually in bands and I can see them make comments when I play. That bothers me. I have been doing this for about a year and 2...count them slowly 2 of my friends have ever shown up. So it makes me feel like I am not worth the effort to show up and render support. That bothers me. I never considered myself a superstar or anything, but I thought I could carry a tune. Apparently I am wrong. So other than in my little ol' house...my musical career is pretty much done. Wow...reality really sucks.

Been wonderin'of late why I even bother sometimes. It seems that everything I like to do gets taken away or ignored. Like music, it seems that I can't practice (too loud), can't go to open mike (one of us sick every figgin week it seems), when I do go to open mike, nobody I know ever shows up. I rarely get to go to karaoke. I think I'll hang the old guitar up and sell of my discs. After all...with a following as small as mine, I couldn't even get a beer for the "it was nice" performance. I am soooo bummed out. Guess I'll stick to being a public jack-ass. That seems to fit better anyway. I'll just be the dumb ol' redneck that had the nerve to wear a wild shirt and a cowboy hat in public. (Oh fer shame). I can't seem to get motivated for anything else. I am trying to make a pirate ship. Want to write another song. Want to get the second floor bedroom done. Just can't seem to get it all going. Guess I'll have to knuckle down though. Can't have guests over until then. Not like anyone WOULD come over...but I hear there are some Mormons in the area. Can't wait for beer o'clock. Think maybe 2 or 20 shots of whiskey wouldn't hurt either. Oh well...woke up breathing...so I guess not all is lost....or is it?
